As part of a pilot project ‘My Russia: Peter’s city’ (‘Moya Rossiya: Grad Petrov’) organized by the Russian Ministry of Culture, 18,231 school students from 31 subjects of Russia (Northwestern Federal District, Central Federal District, Far Eastern Federal District) visited St. Petersburg last year. Eight 3-4* hotels were allocated for the school groups. The trip’s program included visiting the most prominent sights of the northern capital: Mariinsky Theater, Hermitage Museum, Russian Museum, Petergof, Peter and Paul Fortress, Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery and Field of Mars, Deputy Minister of Culture Alla Manilova said at a press-conference.

“It is impossible to cultivate civic responsibility and patriotism in children without having them travel across their homeland. In the 1990s this tradition faded away, and now our national agenda is to revive it,” said the Deputy Minister.

She also added that while implementing the project, the Ministry of Culture actively collaborated with the executive bodies of the federal subjects and with the North-West Division of the Russian Union of Travel Industry. Also, a model of cooperation with the Russian Railways was developed.

“The project was very well-received by the subjects; they recognized its importance and now they want it to continue with even more cities and more students,” said Manilova.

The schoolchildren’s stay in St. Petersburg was financed with 164 million rubles from the national budget. Museums admitted them for free. On average, 8.5 thousand rubles per each young traveler was spent (for 3 days of stay).

Manilova noted that the regions paid for the traveling expenses. Each subject tackled this financial issue differently, for instance, in Lipetsk and Vologda regions the transfer of schoolchildren from low-income families was financed with social security funds. Many parents gladly spent their family budget money to pay for their children’s traveling expenses.

According to the Deputy Minister of Culture, the project ‘My Russia: Peter’s city’ will be extended this year, and the project ‘Moscow – Golden Ring’ will be launched.
